The area, known as the Illinois Valley, was originally settled some 5,000 years ago by the Takelmas Indians. In 1874 while settler Elijah Davidson was hunting, his dog chased a bear into a cave. This let to the discovery of more caves that gradually became an attraction. Developers opened the caves as a commercial operation in the 1890's and in 1909, President Taft declared the caves a National Monument. The Oregon Caves provide a major attraction today with its outcroppings of stalagtite and stalagmite.

World War II saw the development of the timber industry in the area, which continues to influence the area. Cave Junction was incorporated in 1948.

Cave Junction is located at the junction of Highways 46 and 199 which leads to Interstate 5. The town serves as a small commercial center for the surrounding area.

Outdoor recreation is ideal in the Cave Junction area. There is good access to snow sports, including downhill and cross country skiing in the winter. The area is part of Southern Oregon’s Banana Belt because of its mild climate.
